A New Book Called Minding

Thoughts About the Human Brain

This accordion-fold book has double pages so that the viewer gets a sense of depth looking through the central cutout image. The dimensions are about 90" spread out and 12" high. It folds up to a depth of 1" and is housed in an archival box. If you would like to hear my 6-minute video about the making of the book, please click on the link to the YouTube video:

In the Rooms the Women Come and Go by Emily Marks, 2022.

I long thought about making a piece about women and literature. In 2022, I came up with the idea of constructing a pop-up book called In the Rooms the Women Come and Go. The form is based on a Victorian dollhouse book I deconstructed. It consists of four separate sections with an upstairs and downstairs to each. As I considered each room, I inserted connections to my love of art and literature as it pertains to women's lives. Since it is hard to see as a photograph, I made a video about it that I posted on Youtube. Please click on the link to see it in detail.

Pride and Prejudice Sampler

During the Covid shelter in place era, after the novel was finally published, I turned to making a Pride and Prejudice sampler, embroidering linen with colored cotton floss. I made the silhouette profiles of Darcy and Elizabeth from scanned and reduced text printed on silk and then embroidered in gold thread to affix them to the linen. It took hours and hours but the time passed quickly each day and it soothed me to pull the stitches slowly through the linen.
